The collection is comprised of sixteen audio recordings and unedited transcripts (of six of the interviews) with former Appalachian Volunteer workers who were assigned to West Virginia, between 1964 and 1967, and then settled in the area after their service ended.These interviews were recorded by Marie Tyler McGraw during the summer of 1982 with the support of an Appalachian Studies Fellowship from the Berea College Appalachian Center. Perley F. Ayer, a native of New Hampshire, was educated at the University of New Hampshire (B.S.1922) and Cornell University (M.S. 1947). Prior to coming to Berea in 1947, he had been employed as an extension agent in New Hampshire and as an instructor at Pleasant Hill Academy in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee.
